Have you tried to get into domain sales and not succeeded? There’s a community of domain resellers out there, buying domains constantly. Uninformed domainers claim a lot of the good, short and memorable domains are already registered. Although with the right mindset, you’ll open yourself to a lot more possibilities and considerations when valuing a domain.
Domain Value Factors
When ranking a website, many factors are at play to determine which site is #1. Ask yourself these questions when estimating a domains value.
- Domain Age: How long has the site been registered without expiring?
- Daily Traffic: What amount of regular traffic does your site see?
- Website Value: Is there a website and/or assets published? Or is it just a domain name?
- Internet Marketing: Are there established backlinks pointing to the domain?
Registars
One of the most popular ways to go is GoDaddy. To eliminate a bias, I also suggest DirectNIC, Domain Sales, and 1&1. Each has their good and bad reviews (especially GoDaddy), but when it boils down to it: coupon codes frequently put .com purchases at $8 with GoDaddy. Consider registering privately to save your email inbox from solicitations and SPAM.
TLD Extentions & Domain Value
Aside from the commonly known .com, .net, .org, there’s a slew of other extensions available for you to register. Depending on your industry and location, you may consider purchasing a TLD that plays with or targets a given audience.
While purchasing a domain runs from $10-$25, TLD dependent, their value can bring in hundreds to thousands. A seasoned, brand-able, memorable, and keyword rich domain will sell one out of three times (depending on your choice
).
Selling Your Domain
To build more value in your domain, put up a quick website. This doesn’t have to be more than a few pages, but show what’s possible with different layouts, fonts, format stylings (lists, bold, etc). Add images, link pages between each other, and mind your anchor and alt texts. Keep it simple, but illustrate the possibilities.
A lot of potential buyers are hungry to break into owning a website, but are without a clue on how to get started. Increasing the value with a website can go along way toward securing your buyer.
Build a Portfolio
Buy a domain for yourself and setup a quick list of your domains for sale. You may find another buyer who’s interested in one or more of your domains. Promote this page on social media networks, and submit to relevant resources. Focus on the yeses and brush off the no’s you get.
